A cozy spot to bask in the morning sun

María y Montejo is a lovely small café located in a renovated traditional downtown home on a narrow road, right behind Paseo de Montejo, the main historic avenue in Mérida, Yucatán. The natural light streaming through the windows and skylights, as well as the rustic décor, create a warm and relaxing atmosphere, making this the perfect place to enjoy a nice cup of coffee and take in the sunshine.

Food review

9.0

The main highlight of María y Montejo is their freshly-brewed artisanal coffee. The options on the menu range from traditional hot and iced presentations, to elaborate filter methods, such as Chemex and Aeropress. I enjoyed a refreshing iced latte. The food menu is small, offering some toast options, sandwiches and homemade pastries. I personally tried the smoked salmon toast and the berry toast, which were simple but tasty and well-presented.

Service

8.7

The service was a little slow considering the simple items we ordered. However, both servers were extremely welcoming and friendly. You can tell they truly care about providing a pleasant experience to their customers.

Atmosphere

9.7

Hidden away on a small, narrow road, this place really embraces the essence of downtown Mérida. With its modest but beautiful architecture, its warm and rustic décor, its indoor fish pond, its laidback servers and its diversity of local and international customers, María y Montejo is slowly becoming one of Mérida's beloved cafés, and I'm glad I finally got to visit. The place is beautifully lit with natural light, which creates a calm environment

Cleanliness

10.0

Everything was extremely clean and comfortable. The food was being prepared right in front of us in the most hygienic way.

Concept

María y Montejo focuses on providing high-quality and freshly-brewed coffee in a homey environment, away from the rush of city life. The location is a mix of soft colors, natural light, and nature, such as indoor plants and a pond with running water, which together create a nice, calm ambiance to enjoy a slow morning in.

I was surprised at the affordable prices, given its centric location and the quality of their coffee. The coffees themselves were cheaper than those at any famous coffee chains. I ended up paying about $270 pesos for an iced latte and two toasts.
